Question to the Lord Chancellor, Jack Straw, about sentencing
5 Dec 2007
I welcome Lord Carter’s proposal for a sentencing commission, which is a good way forward... does he [the Lord Chancellor] agree that courts should be determining an appropriate sentence on the basis of the offence itself, and not how many prison places are available on any given day?

New move on equal treatment for all workers
3 Dec 2007
George sponsors new Bill to secure equal treatment for agency workers - the Temporary and Agency Workers (Equal Treatment) Bill. The Bill will ensure that over 1.4 million agency workers in the UK are entitled to the same terms and conditions as their directly employed colleagues. George calls on the Chancellor of the Exchequer to encrypt Government databases
20 Nov 2007
Given that ultimately any system is vulnerable to human error, will my right hon. Friend consider during his various reviews of the problem whether it would be prudent for such databases to be encrypted in future?

Question to the Prime Minister on targets
24 Oct 2007
I wonder whether my right hon. Friend could help me with a little problem that I have been wrestling with. If the Government were to abolish public service targets, how would we know how well they are doing?

Question to the Chancellor of the Exchequer calling for more social rented housing

On 9 Oct 2007
I warmly welcome my right hon. Friend’s announcement on the increase in supply of housing for sale, which will be greatly welcomed, particularly by young families just starting out in life. Will he confirm whether there will also be an increase in the supply of social rented housing?

Speech on the penal system and criminal justice calling for earlier interventions to tackle crime
24 July 2007
I t is essential that we focus our interventions on what has been shown to be most effective... that means using interventions that have a strong evidence base. It also means talking to offenders, who have direct experience of the criminal justice system

Question to the Prime Minister about transport

11 July 2007
I welcome the innovative process that my right hon. friend described in his statement and I welcome the measures listed in it, particularly the local transport Bill. May I urge him to include, as part of the integrated transport strategy that he proposes, light rail and trams?

Question to the Prime Minister calling on the Muslim community to provide strong leadership
4 July 2007
Does my right hon. Friend agree that, in order to tackle terrorism, we need the Muslim community to provide strong leadership from within that community? Does he also agree that the experience of Northern Ireland bears out very strongly his belief that we need a bipartisan approach if we are to succeed in resolving these problems?

Question to the Home Secretary about powers to hold terrorist suspects
2 July 2007
I, too, welcome my right hon. Friend to her new and awesome responsibilities and congratulate her on the calm and effective way in which she has carried them out over the past few days. I also welcome the fact that she continues to review counter-terrorism legislation. May I express the hope that should it prove necessary to extend the time for which a suspect may be held for questioning, she will bring measures forward without any hesitation?

Question to the Prime Minister about the Labour Government's achievements in Knowsley since 1997

20 Jun 2007
Last week, my right hon. Friend opened the new management centre at Knowsley community college. Apart from that and 240 extra medical staff in the NHS, a brand new hospital, an 18 per cent. increase in GCSE passes, seven new learning centres and halving the rate of unemployment, what has my right hon. Friend ever done for Knowsley?
