  Melling Mount Residents’ Association

This was an ad hoc meeting on 23 February 2008 with some members of Melling Mount Residents’ Association. Attendees from the meeting have confirmed that it is an accurate account.

Views of Melling Mount Residents’ Association

Melling Mount Residents’ Association, which is formally constituted, represents approximately 414 households, holds regular meetings, organises community events, is open to all Melling Mount residents and has arrived at a view through discussions with residents.

Those people who attended the meeting broadly supported the Tesco/Everton proposal for Kirkby Town Centre and said it represents a ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity for the town. However, they stressed that they could not speak on behalf of all residents of the area and Melling Mount Residents’ Association does not have a formal position on the development.

The attendees believe that match day traffic problems could be overcome by the proposed use of park-and-ride schemes and encouraging supporters to travel by train. It was suggested that a railway station could be located in a way that would allow supporters to be directed through Millennium Park to the stadium. They feel that this would make ground control easier and prevent congestion along Kirkby Row.

The Association does believe, however, that more thought is needed on the issues of crowd control and anti-social behaviour, the infrastructure necessary to support a football stadium, including the extended use of CCTV and street wardens. They would wish to see Knowsley Council, Development Securities and the main developer, Tesco, working closely together to bring about a plan that would create a single regeneration package which integrated the town centre into a single entity.
